Modeling Invention by Analogy in ACT-R

چکیده
We investigate some aspects of cognition involved in invention, more precisely in the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. We propose the use of the Structure-BehaviorFunction (SBF) language for the representation of invention knowledge; we claim that because SBF has been shown to support a wide range of reasoning about physical devices, it constitutes a plausible account of how an inventor might represent knowledge of an invention. We further propose the use of the ACT-R architecture for the implementation of this model. ACT-R has been shown to very precisely model a wide range of human cognition. We draw upon the architecture for execution of productions and matching of declarative knowledge through spreadingactivation. Thus we present a model which combines the well-established cognitive validity of ACT-R with the powerful, specialized model-based reasoning methods facilitated by SBF.

Steady Flow Analysis and Modeling of the Gas Distribution Network Using the Electrical Analogy (RESEARCH NOTE)
The mathematical modeling of a gas network is a powerful tool in order to identify the behavior of system under the different conditions. The modeling can be performed both for the steady state and unsteady state conditions. It is possible to use the fluid flow basic governing equations or the electrical analogy concept for developing the model. The second approach provides a simpler and more r...
متن کاملLearning Abductive Inference by Analogy in ACT-R
The question investigated in this paper is: How does ACT-R propitiate as an architecture for modeling the search and evaluation of (scientific) hypotheses? It is demonstrated how inductive search, modeled by Paul Thagard's PI and Herbert Simon's BACON.1, can easily be learned from examples by ACT-R 3.0 as a form of abductive inference. Furthermore, I argue that PI's hypothesis evaluation proces...
متن کاملNeuro-ACT Cognitive Architecture Applications in Modeling Driver’s Steering Behavior in Turns
Cognitive Architectures (CAs) are the core of artificial cognitive systems. A CA is supposed to specify the human brain at a level of abstraction suitable for explaining how it achieves the functions of the mind. Over the years a number of distinct CAs have been proposed by different authors and their limitations and potentials were investigated. These CAs are usually classified as symbolic and...
متن کاملModeling Analogical Problem Solving in a Production System Architecture
We propose an approach to developing models of analogical reasoning within production system architectures. Though existing theories of analogy have succeeded in capturing many aspects of analogical behavior, they have several limitations. First, the theories use empirical support that focuses almost exclusively on high-level data that illustrate the results of analogy, ignoring low-level data ...

The general question investigated in this paper is: How can the cognitive architecture of John Anderson's ACT-R theory of the mind be used for modeling the search and evaluation of (scientific) hypotheses? It is demonstrated how inductive search, modeled by Paul Thagard's PI and Herbert Simon's BACON, can both be learned from examples by ACT-R as a form of abductive search. Furthermore, I argue...
